Description
-
No Separate National Organic Milk Standard Yet:
-
Unlike countries like the USA (USDA Organic) or EU, Bangladesh does not yet have a specific legal standard or certification body solely for organic milk.
-
However, some producers self-declare their milk as organic based on certain practices.
-
-
General Guidelines Followed by Organic Dairy Farms:
Many farms marketing organic milk in Bangladesh claim to follow these non-certified but commonly accepted practices:-
No use of antibiotics or synthetic hormones.
-
Cows are fed organic (chemical-free) fodder.
-
Cattle are not injected with growth hormones.
-
No urea, silage, or artificial milk-boosting agents are used.
-
Animals are pasture-raised or humanely treated.
-
-
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI):
-
BSTI does have standards for raw milk and processed dairy, but not a distinct “organic” certification standard yet.
-
They test for contamination, added water, fat content, and microbiological safety.
-
-
Bangladesh Organic Agriculture Network (BOAN):
-
Promotes organic farming practices, though not officially a certifier for dairy.
-
Supports sustainable, chemical-free agriculture that can apply to dairy feed.
-
-
Private Certification or International Benchmarks:
-
Some farms try to follow international standards such as IFOAM, USDA Organic, or EU Organic as internal guidelines, but these are mostly self-imposed, not certified.
-
🐄 What to Look For in “Organic” Milk in Bangladesh:
-
Ask if the farm uses antibiotic-free, chemical-free, and GMO-free feed.
-
Look for lab test reports or third-party verifications, if available.
-
Farms like Shuddho, MilkVita (select lines), and Sajida Foundation’s projects promote safer dairy but may not be fully certified as organic.
